The modern AAS instrument was pioneered by Sir Alan Walsh in the 1950s at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). In Melbourne, Australia, Walsh realized that measuring the absorption of light was more valuable than observing the emission.
